Write the CanTEST (English proficiency test)

Students are required to take the CanTEST if they have a conditional admission to UPEI and/or cannot provide proof they have met the minimum UPEI language requirement for admission. The UPEI CanTEST is also a service for local employers, Holland College applicants, high school students, and newcomers to PEI.

Before you begin: 
  • The test takes about 2 1/2 hours to complete. There is no special preparation required. Bring a pen or pencil.
  • CanTESTs are held every Tuesday morning from January to April, at no charge to students.
Steps To Follow: 
Step 1

Contact the International Relations Office to register for the UPEI CanTEST.

Step 2

Bring photo identification Photo ID is required on the day of the test.

After you complete these steps: 

After completing the CanTEST, scores will be emailed to test takers within 48 hours. For UPEI applicants, scores are sent to the UPEI Registrar’s Office.

  • Further information about the UPEI language policy for Undergraduate and Graduate applicants is available at http://www.upei.ca/studentlife/english-language-proficiency-requirements.
  • The UPEI CanTEST is used as a placement test only and accepted by UPEI and Holland College for admission. It is not the official CanTEST offered by the University of Ottawa. The results are generally not recognized by other Canadian universities.
  • Individuals can take the CanTEST every 3 months and results are valid for 2 years.
  • EAP students are automatically registered in EAP courses using CanTEST scores. Visit the EAP page for further information about course placement guidelines. 
  • Please contact the EAP office if a letter outlining CanTEST scores is required for your employer or Holland College.
  • The UPEI CanTEST consists of 4 sections: (1) Listening Comprehension - 30 minutes; (2) Reading Comprehension - 50 minutes (both are multiple choice type questions); (3) 1-page Writing sample on a general topic - 60 minutes; (4) Oral Interview (for new students only) - 10 minutes.
  • Special accommodations can be made for employers interested in group assessment of employees.
