The Institute of Island Studies holds various conferences that contribute to the social study of Island life and bring academics on a local and international level together on PEI.
Time and a Place: Environmental histories, environmental futures, and Prince Edward Island.
June 13-18, 2010
This unique conference will be a highly interactive, week-long exploration of the Island's environmental history featuring exciting keynote presenters who will place PEI 's history into its national and global context. Because we are planning a series of field trips through which you can interact with the people and environment of PEI, the conference is limited to one busload of participants. This will allow for a rich experience where you don't have to choose between concurrent sessions.
The conference will bring together local, national, and international participants to develop an understanding of PEI's environmental history, assist future environmental planning on PEI, and explore the value of islands for crafting comprehensive plans for sustainability. There will be workshops, field trips, and public lectures.
Registration for the conference is now closed, but day registration will be available, and there will be public speakers each evening open to everyone.
Young peoples’ visions for the future of their coastal communities will be a vital part of Coastal Zone Canada 2010, to be held on Prince Edward Island this July. Please help us reach young people (age 16-26) in your school, department or organization by sharing the attached poster invitation to participate in Youth on the Coast , July 23-25, just prior to CZC 2010.
The youth forum will be held in beautiful seaside South Rustico, PEI.Approximately 50 young people will be selected to share skills and perspectives and create a series of short videos that will carry their concerns and call to action to the Coastal Zone Canada conference.
Participants will learn or improve video-making skills while engaging in coastal tours and activities that encourage an exchange of views on the social, cultural and environmental issues of the coastal zone.
As well, we are inviting young researchers and coastal activists to share their work in the areas of coastal science, entrepreneurship, public engagement, or arts and culture.Presentations can include reports on coastal activities, research findings, videos, or artistic representations on a coastal theme (e.g. music, poetry).
The registration fee for Youth on the Coast ($125 +GST) includes all local travel, meals and accommodation for the weekend forum, AND free access to the CoastalZoneCanada2010 main conference – an exceptional deal!We hope to make a number of travel subsidies available for low income participants, but all prospective participants are encouraged to approach their community organization or university department for sponsorship. For further information, please go to www.gov.pe.ca/czc2010/ and click on “youth forum”.
