$10.76/hour (includes vacation pay) for Student Marker positions $11.11/hour (includes vacation pay) for Lab Assistant positions

September 2014 to December 2014, January 2015 to April 2015

The Physics Department seeks applications for student assistants in for the 2014-2015 academic year.  This includes marking and lab assistant positions in first, second and third year physics courses.


Lab assistants will be:
• Acting as a general resource person for students during the lab;
• Monitoring student operations in conducting experiments;
• Ensuring all computer and lab equipment is used safely;
• Following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as applicable

Markers are responsible for marking assignments and quizzes with answer keys and procedural instructions as given by the course instructor.

Fall 2014 courses include: first year Physics 111 and/or 121, second year Physics 201 (Waves and Oscillations), 221 or 222 (Modern Physics), 251 (Introductory Astronomy I), third year Physics 312 (Electromagnetism I).  

Winter 2015 courses include: first year Physics 112 and/or 122, second year Physics 252 (Introductory Astronomy II), 272 (Electronics and Instrumentation), third year Physics 331 (Physics of the Human Body).


Applicants will have successfully completed the course for which they are selected to assist in the lab or course, or have relevant alternative experience (e.g. Physics 221 and 222 both cover Modern Physics).  Preference will be given to students taken Physics as their major or minor.  Previous marking or lab experience is an asset.

Students hired will be required to successfully complete an on-line WHMIS course and attend a departmental “Site Safety Training” session.

Please note that assistants for either or both academic terms are chosen from this competition.  Applicants wanting to be considered for the second term only must apply now and indicate this on their application.
