 Three Oaks Innovations, Inc. (TOI) is a not-for-profit, independent company established by the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) that is embedded within Research Services at UPEI. TOI assists researchers in transforming their innovative ideas into commercial products, business opportunities, and public knowledge. TOI also facilitates linking business to applied research capacity within UPEI.
Three Oaks Innovations is seeking a dynamic leader with the management and leadership skills to effectively identify, develop and manage strategic industry partnerships and collaborative opportunities with partners from the private, public and research sectors. The successful candidate will navigate, deliver, and resolve issues among all stakeholder groups at both practical and strategic levels. The position will manage the TOI finances and negotiate future funding and financial agreements for the organization with existing and potential partners.
Reporting to the Three Oaks Innovations Board of Directors and Vice-President, Research, the Managing Director will provide proactive leadership and direction for the identification, development, and management of effective and strategic industry partnerships. The Managing Director will facilitate the creation of collaborative opportunities that address both traditional technology development and commercialization from within UPEI and will promote a clear understanding and awareness of TOI’s mandate and service, both internally and externally.
The Managing Director also will engage strategically within both the public and private sectors and will secure traditional industry, as well as non-industry, based partnerships and funding to improve the impact, integration, and effectiveness of UPEI’s contribution to research investments. The Managing Director will explore new opportunities to facilitate research innovation, commercialization, and economic development.
The Managing Director will be a key contributor to the UPEI Research Services team and will be responsible for directing TOI staff. The Managing Director will manage complex problems and work with industry partners, licensees, and external counsel to effectively integrate their activities.
• working within the public and academic research environments, with a particular emphasis on liaisons with the private sector, and/or the technology innovation sector;
• leading the conceptualization, development, and implementation of industry and community engagement, engagement frameworks, strategies, tactics and approaches;
• identifying, developing and negotiating innovative technologies, partnerships, strategic alliances and relationships with support from private and public sectors (e.g., university, industry, and/or government) that includes developing an entrepreneurial culture;
• demonstrating a strong understanding of research, technology, business and marketing in leading and implementing strategic and operational plans and in developing corporate frameworks, proposals, policies, and/or standards;
• understanding of business contracts, intellectual property, licensing agreements, developing and gathering intelligence (e.g., technology and market assessments, corporate due diligence);
• managing human, financial and material resources;
• excellent communication skills and the ability to address a large audience and work one on one with researchers, with groups of scientists and industry business people, building trusted advisor relationships and the ability to speak within a researcher and CEO environment;
• ability to work with financial systems and database systems in a network environment.

Qualification Summary
The Managing Director should be a strong, capable leader with a successful business career, excellent managerial performance, and outstanding interpersonal skills. He/she should have a Masters or PhD degree in a relevant discipline, such as business, engineering or science or an acceptable combination of education, training, and experience.
Language Requirements
Fluency in both English and French is an asset.
