This is a full time continuous appointment subject to a probationary review after one year.

 The Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC), University of Prince Edward Island, seeks a Director of the Diagnostic Services Laboratory (DS). The successful applicant reports to the Associate Dean, Professional Services. The Director is responsible for all aspects of the management and operation of DS and will ensure it fulfills its role in the teaching, service and research mission of the AVC. In close collaboration with the Associate Dean, Professional Services, the Director provides the leadership to create a financially sustainable laboratory that delivers exemplary client service, a supportive environment for student learning and a fulfilling workplace for faculty members and staff. The Director is responsible for day-to-day operational management of DS that includes supervision of staff members, oversight of expenditures and revenues and trouble shooting operational issues. The Director must effectively communicate his/her vision and goals and work collaboratively with stakeholders, both within and outside of DS and AVC.
Diagnostic Services includes laboratories focused on clinical pathology, bacteriology, virology, parasitology, histology, and post mortem and employs approximately 21 support staff and 4 professional staff. DS provides services to the AVC Veterinary Teaching Hospital, regional veterinary practices, provincial and federal government agencies and departments, researchers and producers. Over 300 veterinary diagnostic laboratories worldwide participate in the Veterinary Laboratory Association Quality Assurance Program of which DS is a key partner in delivering.

QUALIFICATIONS:
The successful applicant must have a veterinary or a university degree in a related field, have at least 5 years of management experience working in a veterinary/medical diagnostic laboratory, leadership/management experience/training and have excellent communication, relationship building and organizational skills. Board certification in a relevant diagnostic specialty, experience working in a unionized or academic postsecondary environment or a business-related degree would be assets.
