The AVC Centre for Aquatic Health Sciences at the University of Prince Edward Island is looking to employ one (1) Fish Health Technician for a twelve-month term of employment beginning in January 2013. This position will be based in St. Albans, Newfoundland and Labrador.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful applicant will assist in carrying out a variety of field-based research projects. The position may involve occasional travel within Newfoundland to work at hatcheries, sea cage sites (requiring travel by boat) and/or temporary sampling stations set up in processing plants, the AVC field office/lab or other locations. Irregular hours and some weekend work will be involved.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• High school graduate.
• Preference will be given to candidates with an aquaculture-related diploma from a recognized school or a combination of education and relevant work experience.
• Must have a strong self-motivated work ethic with the ability to work independently and as an energetic team player.
• Skills required include: ability to do repetitive work accurately, excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to learn quickly.
• Minimum of one year experience in fish health/aquaculture/fisheries/marine biology is preferred.
• A valid driver’s license and the ability to drive a standard transmission vehicle would be an asset.
• Aseptic sampling techniques, computer skills and data entry, animal handling and husbandry skills would be an asset.
• Familiarity with farm biosecurity practices would be an asset.
