The School of Sustainable Design Engineering (SSDE) provides students with hands on design experiences in each year of the program.  Students enrolled in the third and fourth year of the program complete Senior Design Clinic projects, solving a real problem for an actual industry client. The SSDE is embarking on such a collaboration with Parks Canada for 2017/2018 to develop an interactive virtual tour of Province House, located in Charlottetown, PEI.
Under the supervision of Prof. Grant McSorley, the Virtual Reality (VR) Research Assistants will participate in the initial data analysis, workflow development and VR system installation and testing. This initial work will aid in setting the context for a senior design project to start in September, 2017. The students will have access to 3D scan and photogrammetry data collected by Parks Canada and will evaluate the feasibility of various options for the creation of a virtual tour, including the installation and testing of a VR system and possible interactive technologies. By the end of the project, there will be a recommendation as to the complexity and feasibility of the various options.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Determine & test typical workflows for the creation of virtual building tours
• Determine & test typical workflows for the creation of VR apps and interactive experiences
• Install and test VR system
• Investigate additional, innovative technology for interacting with VR environments
• Creation of realistic, virtual rendering of a portion of Province House
• Completion of a final report presenting feasibility and complexity of the workflows and technology explored
• Step by step documentation of the workflows and processes tested

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Strong computer assisted design (CAD) and modelling skills
• Ability to critically assess possible workflows, plan out work and suggest improvements
• Some experience with programming, mechatronics
• Strong interest in virtual reality – experience an asset
• Interest in building engineering and architecture
