The Faculty of Education is seeking a student to assist the JERG project to explore effective school policy and strategies to foster youth’s leadership and engagement in building welcoming school and community environment for immigrant and refugee students. The proposed research will adopt a participatory and appreciative approach to explore best strategies to develop youth leadership and engagement in fostering a welcoming school environment for immigrant and refugee students. Data will be collected through interviews, focus groups, research forum, activity log, and field notes.   Participants include educators (principal, EAL teachers, and guided counselors) and students from two selected high schools in Charlottetown.


• Conduct data collection (focus-groups and individual interviews).
• Ensure comprehensive filing, organization and secure maintenance of data.
• Organize local and regional research meetings.
• Organize and facilitate monthly Youth Advisory Council meetings at local schools.
• Transcribe data. 
• Assist with the preparation of research presentation and report.


• Undergraduate or graduate student in Education or a related research discipline.
• Strong qualitative research skills.
• Good knowledge and understanding of research procedures.
• Experience in education-related research activities and/or projects.
• Good knowledge and understanding of PEI school system and environment.
• Experiences and strong skills working with youth from diverse cultural backgrounds.
• Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
• High degree of computer literacy (e.g., familiarity with Nvivo, google apps, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, online communication tools).
• Experience in working effectively in research team environments.
• Strong cross-cultural understanding and competency.
• Proficiency in language(s) other than English/French is desired.
