Agent Based Modelling (ABM) is a simulation technique that models individuals with simple behaviour. Complexity emerges from simple behaviours of large numbers of individuals. Our group is using an ABM to model sea louse (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) infestations on Atlantic salmon farms.
While ABMs are powerful and flexible, they are limited by being computationally expensive. One option is a distributed ABM (dABM). We require someone to research options for converting our salmon farm ABM to a dABM. This will include requirements gathering, literature reviews, and investigation of commercial systems, prototyping, and report writing.
While we are based at the University of Prince Edward Island, the nature of the work means that the successful applicant can be located remotely. In addition to a basic salary some funding is available for travel and accommodation so we can have some face-to-face collaboration.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Gather and define requirements for a salmon farm dABM
• Review literature on dABMs
• Review existing dABM systems (including Academic, OSS, and Commercial)
• Prototype dABMs to gain insight into features and suitability
• A final presentation and report to summarize the research and recommendations

QUALIFICATIONS:

• M.Sc. or strong B.Sc. in Computer Science or demonstrated experience with distributed systems
• Good communication skills
• Self-motivated and able to work independently
• Experience or strong interest in simulation or biological systems is desirable
