$50,347 to $55,378 per annum as per CUPE 1870 (Term may be reduced or extended depending on performance, available funding and departmental requirements)

The University of Prince Edward Island is looking for the right candidate to take on an exciting new position as “Industrial Research Assistant” in the School of Sustainable Design Engineering. Reporting to the Manager of Industry Research, the successful candidate will work closely with researchers in the Research Centres of Excellence, including: Robotics and Industrial Automation; Bioresources and Food Processing; Sustainable Energy; and Sensors, Optics, and Imaging. The successful candidate will be involved in the installation, commissioning, operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of manufacturing, material-handling and testing equipment in the centres. This individual would interact with students, academic staff and other technical and administrative staff on a daily basis.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Installation, commissioning and safe operation of complex industrial equipment, including data collection, recording, analysis, and report preparation and presentation
• Work with research personnel and clients on industry-related projects
• Perform maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting and repair of equipment
• Conduct instrumentation installation and data collection for industry-related research projects
• Adhere to the safe operation of industrial research equipment
• Maintain a safe working environment
• Provision of technical advice and support to other technicians and activities associated with the Centres of Excellence

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Two-year community college diploma in a relevant engineering technology field
• Minimum 2 years of relevant work experience
• Knowledge of and experience in some of the following areas would be considered an asset: fabrication (metal and wood), electronics, controls, welding, machining, electrical, communications, data acquisition and instrumentation.
• Knowledge of computer-aided design software and computer numerical control of machines would be considered an asset.
• Experience in 3D modeling as related to additive manufacturing would be considered an asset
• Excellent communication and problem solving skills
• Experience in a laboratory environment would be considered an asset
• Demonstrated creative, communication, and organizational skills
• Ability to multi-task, coordinate projects and function professionally in a high-pressure, deadline-oriented environment
• Excellent computer skills
