Reporting to the Manager of the Accounting Office, this position is responsible for financial administration of over 1,000 research and special project accounts at the University along with providing financial oversight on all non-student accounts receivable.   The duties will be on an ‘as assigned basis’ covering the range of activities described below.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Financial Administration of research and special project accounts, and non-student accounts receivable
• Ongoing reconciliation and analysis of research and special project accounts
• Authorize and ensure financial reports, claims and invoices are prepared and sent on a timely basis
• Financial monitoring, budgeting and cash flow development for research and special project accounts
• Authorize expenditures and payroll commitments
• Oversight of cash and cheque deposits and related inquiries
• Coordination of audit requests and financial inquiries
• Provide guidance in contract development, including risk assessment, financial planning, payment and invoicing schedules
• Effective communication and collaboration with the Office of Research Services (ORS), staff, faculty, project personnel, and external funding agencies
• Establishment and implementation of effective internal controls
• Perform variety of other management and financial duties as required

Supervisory Responsibilities
• Supervision, direction, and coordination of staff and resources
• Supervision of the section workload and associated deadlines
• Participates in the strategic planning and human resource development for the Accounting Office as part of the supervisory team
• Carries out complex projects as assigned by the Manager of the Accounting Office

Liaison Functions
• Liaise with various University staff, faculty, and project personnel
• Constant communication with ORS staff, particularly the Vice President, Research and Graduate Studies
• Point of contact for external funding agencies and external reporting requirements
• Participate in planning with ORS
• Preparation of statistical analysis and/or reports upon request

QUALIFICATIONS:

• The incumbent will have a University degree in Business with specialization in accounting and finance
• A minimum of 3 years accounting experience, preferably in a University or similar setting
• Demonstrated experience and skills in management and supervision
• Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills
• Familiarity with research accounting would be an asset
• The ability to negotiate and work with external funding agencies and department heads
• Detailed knowledge of and experience working with computerized accounting systems, spreadsheets and database query programs
• Excellent analytical skills
