The Department of Pathology and Microbiology, Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC), University of Prince Edward Island invites applications from qualified individuals for a virology research associate position, half-time, as a cell culturist, molecular biologist and immunologist. RESPONSIBILITIES: The incumbent will assist on a project studying aquatic animal viruses of finfish. The successful candidate will prepare bi-monthly reports on the progress of the project. Other duties will be assigned depending on available time away from the project. QUALIFICATIONS: • PhD degree in biological sciences with a minimum of 5 years of experience in a virology research laboratory will be considered an asset. • Proficient in aseptic techniques, cell culture maintenance and preservation (as used in an aquatic animal virology research laboratory) • Proficient in real-time RT-PCR (different chemistries) and other molecular biology techniques as used in a virology research laboratory. • Knowledge of nucleic acid sequence analysis and reporting. • Proficient in hybridoma technology, antibody production and purification, and cell-based assays. • Impeccable general laboratory skills, including attention to detail, and safety issues. • Experience with record keeping and reporting. • Knowledge of Word, Excel, and other Microsoft programs, and lab software • Ability to work independently and in collaboration with others in a busy lab is essential.
