Summer Student Assistant - Bat Monitoring and Inventory
Hours of Work: 

37.5 hours per week

$10.76 per hour (vacation pay included)

June 1 to August 7, 2015

The Department of Pathology and Microbiology, Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC), University of Prince Edward Island invites applications for a student position, subject to budgetary approval.


Participate in a bat inventory and monitoring program that is being done by the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative (CWHC) for Prince Edward Island National Park.  Under the supervision of a wildlife pathologist and the Canadian National Bat White-nose Syndrome Coordinator, deploy and maintain stationary acoustic monitoring equipment, perform mobile acoustic surveys and participate in external maternity colony identification and counts associated with Park infrastructure.  Accurately record field data, maintain a database that includes all information generated in the project and use computer software to produce spreadsheets and reports related to the project.


• Preference will be given to a third- or fourth-year DVM or biology student with a demonstrated background in bat ecology and health. 
• Protective prophylactic vaccination against rabies is essential. 
• Previous experience with bat ecology fieldwork and acoustic monitoring is highly desirable. 
• Experience utilizing a variety of computer software programs (e.g., Spreadsheets, Word Processing, E-Mail and Web Browsers) is essential.
• Independent work habits are necessary.
• Successful applicants must hold a valid driver’s license.
