The Department of Pathology and Microbiology, Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC), University of Prince Edward Island invites applications for a research student position.

A research student assistant is required to validate a laboratory method for matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF) identification of bacterial organisms isolated from veterinary clinical specimens in the Atlantic Veterinary College Diagnostic Services (DS) Bacteriology Laboratory.


Under the supervision of a DS Bacteriology Laboratory Technologist the research assistant will:
• Retrieve and discuss scientific literature
• Perform bacterial culture using aseptic techniques
• Identify bacteria using MALDI-TOF
• Prepare bacterial isolates for molecular assays (DNA extraction and purification)
• Perform PCR and gene sequence analysis (including interpretation of BLAST results)
• Record data and perform statistical analyses
• Assist in interpretation of results


• Completion of at least one university level Microbiology course (required)
• An A overall average in university Biology courses (required)
• Experience using aseptic techniques in a Containment Level 2 laboratory (required)
• Experience with molecular techniques, including PCR and gene sequence analysis (required)
• Strong organization and communication skills (required)
• Experience with word processing, spreadsheets, and statistical analysis is an asset

Priority will be given to University of Prince Edward Island students in accordance with Recruitment, Selection, Hiring and Employment Policies and Procedures manual.
