Student Research Assistants (Up to 3 positions) - Department of Psychology - Faculty of Arts

Part-time research assistance is required to carry out two primary tasks (1) analysis of data acquired in an automated test of speaking and singing (2) coordination of manuscripts, in support of the progress of a co-edited volume, including maintaining a database and communicating with authors and co-editors. These projects arose through the AIRS Project (Advancing Interdisciplinary Research in Singing, www.airsplace.ca.). The project is now at a stage of consolidating its findings. The student will be expected to apply their knowledge to learn various skills required to accomplish these tasks.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Reporting to the project director, the work will entail the following:
- Analysis of singing (including possible transcription) and verbal data
- Manuscript co-ordination through a computer data base
- Testing participants in a psychology study
- Ingesting content into the AIRS Digital library
- Web-site or social media updating
- Other research-related tasks as required
- Support for university/community research-related initiatives
QUALIFICATIONS:
Priority will be given to students currently registered in disciplines of Psychology, Modern languages, Computer Science among others. The following would be regarded as assets:
- Superior communication skills
- Courses in research methods, statistics
- Course in Music Psychology/Music Cognition, Psycholinguistics, Linguistics
- Ability to work responsibly without close supervision
- Good organizational skills and record-keeping ability
- Capacity to exercise confidentiality and conscientiousness
- Openness to the experience of many cultures
- Word processing, Excel
- International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), HTML, programming
- Music background/singing experience (can be informal)
- Bilingual, especially a tone language
- Knowledge of computer music notation software, and/or Praat speech analysis software
