Dr. William Whelan and Dr. Derek Lawther, Department of Physics, are looking for student research assistants to work on research projects related to the use of Raman Spectroscopy in the agriculture/food sector. The research is focused on the development of optical tools to assess the nutrition content of certain foods.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

•  Collect and analyze spectra from a variety of foods including tomatoes using the Raman spectroscopy system in the Biomedical Optics Lab in the Physics Department
• Troubleshoot the experimental system as needed
• Relate the experimental measurements to the ripening process, such as in tomatoes
• Advance the experimental procedures to obtain quantitative information about carotenoids found in tomatoes

QUALIFICATIONS:

•  The successful candidates will have completed at least two years of a Physics major program, or be pursuing the minor in Biomedical Physics
• Students must include a copy of their degree audit with their applications

Priority will be given to University of Prince Edward Island students in accordance with Recruitment, Selection, Hiring and Employment Policies and Procedures manual.
