 A research assistant is needed to help collect and analyze information for a study entitled, “Fostering Educational Success for Off-Reserve Aboriginal Learners on Prince Edward Island". The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Dr. Jane P. Preston, Faculty of Education, University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) and Carolyn Taylor, Native Council of Prince Edward Island. A key aspect of this position involves being mentored by Dr. Preston and Carolyn Taylor while conducting research in the area of Aboriginal education.
• Perform library and Internet searches on Aboriginal issues and other topics
• Analyze and code research qualitative data on Aboriginal issues and other topics
• Analyze and code some quantitative data on Aboriginal issues
• Assist in the writing of a literature review on Aboriginal issues
• Assist with scheduling and organizing individual interviews for research purposes
• Assist with scheduling and organizing focus group interviews for research purposes
• Assist with conducting individual interviews for research purposes/data collection
• Assist with conducting focus group interviews for research purposes/data collection
• Take notes during individual and focus group interviews
• Transcribe individual interviews and focus group interviews
• Assist with writing the a final report describing the research and its findings
• To travel within PEI on weekdays, weekends, and evenings to conduct interviews and disseminate research results within Aboriginal communities (travel compensation will be provided)
Preference will be given to a graduate student at UPEI enrolled in a Masters of Education program or PhD program preferably in Faculty of Education.

• Experience with library searches and the collection of data for literature reviews
• Strong analytical skills in qualitative and quantitative research
• Strong writing abilities
• Strong organizational abilities
• Ability to work independently and perform tasks on short notice
• Familiarity with Aboriginal culture and ways of knowing
• Familiarity with concepts pertaining to Aboriginal education
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Publisher
• Proficiency at typing and/or experience with transcribing interviews would be an asset.
• Experience with WordPress would be an asset
