 The Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC) at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) seeks to fill the position of Director of the Veterinary Hospital (VH). This is a senior management position in the College and as such is a Member of the Dean's Council and reports directly to the Dean. The AVC is a fully accredited veterinary school and is a Faculty of the University of Prince Edward Island located in the capital city of Charlottetown. The VH includes the Large and Small Animal Hospitals as well as active ambulatory services directed at food animal and equine clients. There are twelve hospital-based clinical services that encompass large and small animal medicine and surgery, anaesthesia, diagnostic imaging, community practice, cardiology, theriogenology, integrative medicine, ambulatory equine services, and ambulatory food animal services. The VH utilizes approximately 45 staff members and 50 faculty members, interns, and residents. The VH is also an important local and regional service provider to veterinarians and the public. Operating as both a primary care and referral veterinary practice, the VH provides a key clinical training environment of veterinary undergraduate and graduate students. RESPONSIBILITIES: • Responsible for all aspects of the management and operation of the VH • Provide the creativity, vision, and leadership required to fulfill the VH's role in the clinical teaching, service, and research mission of the AVC • Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders • Oversee the preparation and administration of the VH budget • Optimize caseload within the VH for financial and educational success • Participate in strategic and business planning for the AVC • Ensure that the VH is maintained at not less than the AVMA/CVMA accreditation standards of operation and those of the PEIVMA • Oversee the development and implementation of VH policies and procedures (operational, administrative, medical, etc) • Establish and participate in appropriate committees and groups to support the function of the VH and to represent it appropriately throughout the University and beyond • Effectively market and promote the services of the VH to referring veterinarians, clients, and the community • Investigate and effectively address concerns from clients or referring veterinarians in regards to activities within the VH • Ensure that all health and safety requirements for employees are met within the VH • Supervise the activities of staff within the VH in conjunction with UPEI human resources department in accordance with applicable collective bargaining agreements • Must build and maintain a cohesive, collegial and collaborative hospital-based clinical services team • Be responsible for ensuring the appropriate licensing of veterinarians and staff within the VH • Perform the duties of a veterinarian within the VTH and/or on behalf of the AVC • Other duties as assigned by the Dean QUALIFICATIONS: • Must hold or be eligible for licensure by the PEIVMA • Must have substantial experience as a clinical veterinarian • Must have relevant experience in veterinary practice management or as a veterinary hospital director • Must have proven experience in supervision, management and mentoring of staff • Post secondary education/training in administration/business is an asset • Experience supervising staff in a unionized environment is an asset Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
