The Robertson Library is seeking applications for a student position for the 2017 summer months. This position will be funded in part by a research grant that was awarded to a digital humanities project that supports PEI history and culture. The PEI Postcards project aims to digitize a large collection of vintage PEI postcards which were obtained by the Robertson Library. In digitizing these postcards we hope to make them available to students, researchers, and the general public, but also preserve them for future use as a vital part of Prince Edward Island history and culture.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• The successful candidate will work under the general direction of the Digital Initiatives and Systems Librarian and Project Librarian, and with library staff to digitize a series of historic PEI postcards using a variety of photographic equipment and software, generate basic metadata about the postcards scanned, ensure that scans and data meet quality standards, work on other quality assurance tasks, load content into the Library’s digital asset management system, and assist with other tasks in the Digitization Lab as required
• The candidate will be exposed to archival best practices and will learn a wealth of information about creating digital exhibits and collections
• The pinnacle of this project has been engaging a digital community with a vested interest in history and genealogy through the medium of social media
• The student should also expect to engage with the community via Twitter, Reddit, and/or Facebook, as well as create regular blog posts detailing their experience with the project

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Knowledge of PEI history, culture and genealogy or a curiosity in learning more about Prince Edward Island would be an asset
• Computer literacy: familiarity with core computer applications, and experience using both Windows and Mac operating systems
• Interest in learning archival and curation practices, specifically in a digital setting
• Experience with image editing software
• Experience using scanners and/or photographic equipment
• Knowledge of a web-based content management like Drupal would be an asset
• Experience with Google Apps (eg. Google Sheets) would be an asset
• Knowledge of the Islandora Digital Asset Management System would be an asset
• Demonstrated ability to perform repetitive work while ensuring careful attention to detail; punctuality; strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills; ability to take direction; ability to work as part of a team; ability to work with and handle fragile material with care
