$36,408 per annum, prorated to term as per CUPE 1870 (salary under review) (grant funded)

The Department of Biology is seeking applications from qualified individuals for a full time term (24 weeks) research assistant position. This employee will support research on mammalian cell culture as part of the Genome Canada TUFGEN project.
The successful applicant will report directly to Dr. Bourlaye Fofana at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Dr. Yanwen Wang at NRC in Charlottetown, and Dr. Marva Sweeney-Nixon at the Department of Biology of UPEI. He/she will conduct mammalian cell culture, treat mammalian cells with different plant-derived compounds, prepare samples, conduct basic insulin assays following the treatments and other duties as required and delegated by the supervisors.

• A diploma from a recognized university or college with specialization in biology, microbiology, biochemistry. Relevant experience and education will be considered. A university degree would be an asset.
• Expertise and knowledge in cell culture and related laboratory techniques
• Strong ability to perform established procedures, use specialized equipment, to troubleshoot problems.
• Strong ability in handling of materials and samples, and small volume of solutions.
• Ability to analyze and interpret data using computer software and prepare results in different formats required for the project report
• Ability to perform general laboratory duties related to day-to-day operations, such as ordering and receiving laboratory supplies.
• Ability to work and communicate effectively in an interdisciplinary research environment.
• Good understanding and practice of confidentiality.
Definite assets:
• Related working experience with BSc or MSc
• Familiarity with the PEI bioscience cluster and its importance
• Previous experience working with students
