Dr. Gordon MacDonald, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, is looking for a Student Research Assistant to work on a research project with the goal of creating a more efficient matrix multiplication algorithm.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Research Assistant will help develop a program to implement a search of possible alternate algebraic expressions for entries of the product of two n by n matrices which use fewer than n cubed multiplications. The Research Assistant will also review the literature concerning the three known algorithms for more efficient matrix multiplications and look for commonalities which will allow us to reduce the size of the search.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The successful candidate will have completed his or her third year in a Mathematics Program. Students must have taken courses in Linear Algebra, Computer Programming and Abstract Algebra. Knowledge of Real Analysis and Fourier Analysis preferred. Ability to program in MAPLE, and C or Java is also required.
