Applications are invited for a student research assistant position in Canadian Confederaton history with Dr. Edward MacDonald.


• The student who is hired will conduct on-line and on-site archival searches for primary documents pertaining to Canadian Confederation in 1864-1867, with a view to creating web-site resources for the Guardians of Confederation conference scheduled for autumn 2014.
• As a case study, the student researcher will also compile for digitization purposes a comprehensive block of primary documents pertaining to Prince Edward Island and Confederation.
• To this end, the student will communicate with archivists about document holdings, order material on inter-library loan, photocopy, organise, and file.
• The student will also compile published transcriptions of primary documents and seek permissions from copyright holders for material that might be digitized.
• The students will also be required to annotate relevant sources and prepare reports and bibliographies for the conference organizers.


• Applicants should be in their third or fourth year of a degree program in History or Canadian Studies.
• Applicants should have a good working knowledge of historical methods, analysis and research, and strong writing ability.
• Applicants should also have firsthand experience with research and the analysis of primary sources.
• Good basic computer processing skills are required, and experience with digitization processes will be considered an asset.
