The Faculty of Education at the University of Prince Edward Island has openings for sessional instructors to teach the following course in Summer 2017.

The Certificate in Educational Leadership in Nunavut consists of five courses (ED-5090, ED-5110, ED-5120, ED-5130 and ED-5140).  This summer ED-5120 is scheduled to be offered in-person in Clyde River, Nunavut. 

Please note that ED-5120 will include six hours of a pre-course reading/assignment, as well as 30 hours of face-to-face instruction.  This course will be co-taught with another instructor.  If you wish to co-submit with another person, please do so. Co-submission, however, is not required.

The instructors will be asked to work closely with the UPEI Academic Lead in preparation for the course.  This includes pre-course conference calls and a debriefing conference call at the end of the course.   All course preparation will need to be completed two months before the start date of the course.  Depending on availability of flights and potential pre and post-course instructor meetings, the time spent physically present in Nunavut will include a few days before and after the course dates.

ED-5120 EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP — ENGAGING NUNAVUT PARENTS, ELDERS, AND COMMUNITY (2 sections)

This course focuses on the development of collaborative relationships, positive communication, and empowerment of parents, elders, and community members who lead, support, and guide education in Nunavut. Participants discuss approaches that respond to and involve the community, and build accountability in ways that are transparent and reciprocal. The involvement of the extended community in the daily life and long-term vision of the school provides a central focus as participants reflect on, and write about, the process of creating collaborative learning communities with parents, caregivers, and elders based on cultural values, beliefs, and principles.

This is a three-semester hour course offered in-person from July 18-24 in Clyde River, Nunavut.

Qualifications:

Ideally, applicants for sessional teaching positions in the Certificate in Educational Leadership in Nunavut require recent, successful leadership and teaching experience within the K–12 system in Nunavut. An understanding of Inuit education and recent legislation, policies and curricula guiding school programs in Nunavut is necessary. The ability to understand, converse and write in Inuktitut as well as English is an advantage.

Applicants will normally possess a graduate degree in education with a focus on Inuit educational leadership.  A high level of expertise related to the literature and scholarship in both action research and educational leadership in Nunavut, a comprehensive understanding of Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit as it is applied in light of recent educational legislation and policy in Nunavut, and the ability to teach comfortably in a bilingual (Inuktitut/English) teaching environment with Inuit graduate students are considered assets.

In all instances, qualified applicants on the UPEI Sessional Roster of the Faculty of Education will be given priority.

The offering of these courses is conditional on final enrolment numbers. The dates and Nunavut locations are currently considered tentative. All sessional courses are subject to the final budgetary and administrative approval. The availability of sessional positions is conditional on the finalization of regular Faculty member workload distribution.
