The Department of Pathology and Microbiology, Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC), University of Prince Edward Island invites applications from qualified individuals to fill a half-time MTS-7 position in a cancer research laboratory. The term is 1 year, with the possibility of extension. The lab uses molecular and histological approaches to study cancer progression and treatment strategies.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful applicant will have experience with molecular biology techniques and have demonstrated the ability to rapidly acquire new research skills. The technician will manage a containment level 2 (CL2) research laboratory, perform research utilizing molecular biology techniques including western blot and real-time RT-PCR, and will contribute to the training programs of undergraduate and graduate students. They will maintain cancer cell lines, perform in vitro experiments, and will be involved with lab organization, making reagents and maintaining project records. Additional responsibilities may include contributions to in vivo experiments including animal handling, participation in post-mortem examinations and performing immunohistochemistry.

QUALIFICATIONS:

A BSc or RT (Registered Technician) and five years of relevant laboratory experience (including experience with laboratory management, cell culture, western blot and real-time RT-PCR) are required. The successful applicant will possess strong communication and organizational skills, be highly motivated, be able to work independently, have familiarity with computers (Microsoft Office) and will be comfortable working with students. Experience with immunohistochemistry, histomorphometry and animal models would be an asset.
