Dr. Karen Samis and Dr. Christian Lacroix, Biology Department, are seeking one Research Assistant to work in plant ecology research.

The research is funded by an NSERC Engage grant, and involves industry collaboration. We are working with Island Water Technologies to assess the potential of a seaweed extract as a biostimulant in plant growth. The extract will be tested on germination and plant growth in three plant systems in concurrent greenhouse experiments.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• The student will be required to germinate, grow, care for and manage the experimental populations, as well as to follow all protocols and schedules, keep a lab book detailing all methods and procedures, and enter data into excel spreadsheets on a regular basis
• Some troubleshooting may be required to ensure experiments are complete and that data can be collected as planned
• The student will be required to collect data as plants/seeds mature, which may require some flexibility in working evenings or weekends during critical stages of the experiments
• Participate in lab meetings and assist in other lab projects on a short-term basis, as required
• The student will be expected to work under guidance and with a team, but will be encouraged to explore interesting discoveries

QUALIFICATIONS:

• The student should have a demonstrated academic interest in plant physiology and ecological environments, which may be demonstrated through successful completion of Bio222 (Ecology), Bio202 (Plant Diversity/Botany), Bio326 (Intro Physiology of Cells and Organisms/Gen Phys), Bio314 (Plant community ecology) and Bio327 (Field coastal ecology)
• A demonstrated strength in science writing and communication, and/or strong academic performance in Bio331
• Knowledge and experience with excel or similar data organization platforms
• The student must be a current UPEI Biology Majors student and have completed at least two years of the undergraduate degree with a strong academic standing
• Must be available for the Monday-Friday every week, with minor exceptions to the schedule

Priority will be given to University of Prince Edward Island students in accordance with Recruitment, Selection, Hiring and Employment Policies and Procedures manual.
