The University of Prince Edward Island’s School of Mathematical and Computational Sciences (SMCS) invites applications for a permanent nine-month position as Mathematics Lab Instructor.

The School of Mathematical and Computational Sciences at UPEI consists of 16 professors and one instructor, and offers programs in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Actuarial Science, Financial Mathematics, Data Analytics, Business Analytics, Video Game Programming and Mathematics with Engineering.
The School of Mathematical and Computational Sciences is in a period of expansion, with new programs and growing numbers of students. The successful candidate will provide complementary instruction is support of these programs, particularly in Mathematics, Applied Mathematical Sciences and Statistics.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Teach laboratory sections for various Mathematics, Statistics and Applied Mathematical Sciences courses in SMCS
• Coordinate, train and manage student tutors in SMCS
• Coordinate and operate tutorials in various Mathematics, Statistics and Applied Mathematical Sciences courses
• Operate the SMCS Help Centre
• Conduct the SMCS Mathematics Assessment Test
• Coordinate and operate pre-Calculus tutorials for students who do not pass the Assessment Test
• Design and implement laboratory and tutorial pedagogy (in conjunction with SMCS faculty members)
• Provide System Technician support to SMCS System Administrator

QUALIFICATIONS:

• A Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics or a related discipline, or equivalent education and experience, Master’s Degree would be an asset.
• A record of sustained success in teaching mathematics
• Knowledge of material and pedagogy of standard first two years of university mathematics and statistics curriculum
• Expertise in various software used in Mathematics, Statistics and Applied Mathematical Science laboratories (e.g. Maple, Matlab, R, SAS, VB with Excel, Java, etc.)
• Must be self-motivated but also able to work as part of a team to provide complementary instruction in support of SMCS programs
• Some technical knowledge in System Administration and System support
