Biology Department - Faculty of Science
Sessional Instructor
Second Summer Session 2016

The Faculty of Science at the University of Prince Edward Island has openings for sessional instructors to teach the following course in the Second Summer Session 2016. This appointment is subject to final budgetary approval.

BIO 441 Quantitative Genetics & Bioinformatics
Cross-listed with HB 881/ESC 881, Directed Studies in Quantitative Genetics

Prerequisite: BIO 223 or equivalent (any university genetics course) or permission of instructor

Second summer session, July 5-Aug 14. 3 hour classes + 3 hour labs weekly, Tu/Th 6-9 PM

This lab course, offered to undergraduate and graduate students, consists of theory and practical experience in quantitative genetics, including heredity, genetic analysis and modifying effects in genetic expression. It will be counted towards life science or environmental biology streams. Topics include the theory of genetic architecture including strain effects, parent-offspring regression, modeling the effects of genes on phenotype, genetic and environmental components in analysis, pedigree analysis including Henderson’s ‘animal model’ (1986), quantitative trait loci (QTL) in controlled crosses, genomewide trait mapping, genotype-by-environment interaction (G×E) and the emerging phenomenon of ‘residuals genetics’. Those completing this course will have acquired a strong and complete experience in genetic analysis nearly unique in eastern Canada.

Practical lab experience will include data handling and platform preparation, analysis of heritability/genetic covariance, marker-trait associations, QTL mapping, association analysis including genome-wise association analysis (GWAS) and expression QTL (eQTL) analysis on freely-available genetics platforms. Bioinformatics options will also be available using online curated genomics resources. As an employment aid, the course will also include a short term group project involving either a generalised report, or preferably the supervisor-supported production of a manuscript for possible submission to ecological, evolutionary, agricultural and/or medical journals on classical or residuals genetics in a suitable model system.

• Applicants will hold an M.Sc. or Ph.D. in a field related to the respective course content
• Documented experience teaching these courses would be a definite asset
• Preference will be given to qualified candidates with seniority on the UPEI Sessional Roster in the academic unit

Application Instructions:
Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae and names of three referees to:
