The Department of Biomedical Sciences seeks applications for a summer student research position to assist in the conduct of basic science studies in animal models of neurological disease.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful applicant will work under the supervision of post-doctoral students and/or senior technical personnel to assist in the conduct of experimental studies in a rodent model of epileptogenesis. Specific responsibilities include handling and husbandry of laboratory animals and molecular analyses of brain tissue.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates should be enrolled in a BSc. or DVM undergraduate program and be returning to full-time studies in the Fall of 2012. Successful completion of courses in organic chemistry and mammalian physiology are required. Courses in biochemistry, neurobiology, statistics and embryology/developmental biology are desirable. Previous experience in biomedical research is an asset. The successful candidate should have a stated interest in basic or clinical research in the neurosciences and demonstrate evidence of strong organizational skills, attention to detail and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Candidates should be familiar with standard data handling and presentation software and possess strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills appropriate to working in a team environment. Participation in the AVC Summer Research and Leadership program (see website for details) is an available option for interested students.
