The School of Sustainable Design Engineering (SSDE) at UPEI, located at 550 University Ave in Charlottetown, PEI, is a unique engineering education program organized in the context of a consulting engineering firm.  Faculty and staff act as senior engineers, consults and mentors to project groups comprised of students working on real world problems for community based and industrial clients. 

The School is currently seeking a well-rounded and energetic self-starter for the position of Business Development Engineer (BDE).  Working within the Industry Partnership group and under the direction of the Director of Industry Partnerships, the BDE is the first point of contact with industry.  The BDE is responsible for establishing and managing relationships with industry partners while also supporting the value added engineering services provided by the School.

The Business Development Engineer will work as part of a team that conducts industry engagement activities such as identifying potential clients, performing industrial assessments, project definition and assignment to one of the value added services offered by the School. The BDE will work closely with Synapse, which is the intellectual property and commercialization wing of the University when required.


• Promote & explain the value added services of the School to community and industrial clients in a broad range of geographical and business sectors
• Develop and manage long-term relationships with companies, potential funding agencies and other key stakeholders
• Conduct industrial assessments to identify potential projects and their compatibility with the capabilities and focus areas of the School
• Negotiate memorandum of understandings with potential clients, which identify items to be considered in clinic agreements and/or collaborative research and development projects. Work with legal and other key stakeholders on formal contracts
• Responsible for coordination with clinic facilitators in the assignment of projects to clinic teams to ensure project outcomes and expectations are met
• Work closely with the staff of the School’s Research  Centres of Excellence in the identification, scope and delivery of longer term research and development collaboration projects
• Consult with Synapse  when negotiating/signing a variety of partnership, project and/or clinic agreements, particularly if they have the potential for commercialization or intellectual property considerations
• Responsible for technical resources of the School during the project definition, contract negotiations and signing phases
• Serve as account manager and quality assurance for the assessment of assigned project portfolios including post-delivery follows up related to performance assessments and/or future project possibilities
• Compile and create project reports for the Industry Partnership group and the Industry Partnership Director


• Degree in Engineering or related degree. MEng and/or MBA considered an asset
• Must be eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) in the Province of Prince Edward Island
• Demonstrated technical knowledge in one or more of the following areas: 1. Aerospace and Advanced Manufacturing, 2. Bio-Resources and Food Processing, 3. Robotics and Industrial Automation, 4. Sensors, Optics and Opto-Mechatronics and 5. Sustainable Energy
• Experience with external business development activities
• Experience in crafting and negotiating agreements and contracts
• Strong analytical, documentation and presentation skills
• Strong verbal and written English is mandatory (fluency verbal and written in at least one other language would be an asset)
• Strong computer skills (MS Office) 
• Ability to work independently and under time pressures
• Team oriented
• Willingness to travel on a weekly basis or whenever needed
