 The Institute of Island Studies is seeking a student for a ten week research assistant position on our Community Climate Change Adaptation research project.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the supervision of Dr. Carolyn Peach-Brown, the research assistant will help coordinate and facilitate community outreach activities including a Summer Institute on the role of facilitators in community adaptation processes; to assist with interview transcription, coding and compilation, filing of resource materials, and other tasks as required to support the work of the Institute. Initial duties will include assisting with the Canadian Heritage Rivers Conference. Field work will be concentrated on the north shore of PEI.
QUALIFICATIONS:
This position is partly supported by Service Canada and the applicant must therefore be a Canadian citizen legally entitled to work in Canada; hold no other full time job; be under 30 years of age; and intend to return to school on a full time basis in September.
This position would suit a student with an interest in and knowledge of environmental issues, especially climate change; a desire to learn and practice social science research skills; and a commitment to working for the well-being of PEI communities.
Candidate should have an excellent academic record and demonstrated ability to work well both as part of a team and independently. Must have better than average computer and technological skills. Previous experience with transcription of interviews and data management using NVIVO is desirable. Capacity to use GIS for development of maps is desirable. Familiarity with library research an asset. Patience and flexibility, excellent communications skills, capacity for concentrated work and attention to detail, and an optimistic can-do attitude are essential.
