The Department is seeking applications from qualified individuals to fill a full-time position in the bacteriology research laboratory and to assist with teaching of second year veterinary students.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• The successful applicant will have a multi-disciplinary background demonstrating an ability to acquire new techniques efficiently. General research activities will include management and technical support of the bacteriological and molecular biological research laboratory (322S)
• Be familiar with a variety of bench techniques, including: Risk Group 2 bacterial or fungal culture, as well as purification, quantification, separation and manipulation of nucleic acids and proteins
• The applicant is expected to provide detailed research notes and should be familiar with computers and programs such as: Word, WordPerfect, Excel and Moodle
• Be familiar with Containment Level 2 criteria and will be responsible for certification and applications for 1 to 3 laboratory spaces
• The applicant should also be prepared to request quotes, generate requisitions and participant in account tracking
• Expected to contribute to the research programs of graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, collaborating faculty and/or visiting scientists
• Initially, teaching responsibilities will involve delivery of the laboratory portion of VPM 201 (Veterinary Bacteriology and Mycology)
• Direct interaction with students during weekly laboratories, tracking and ordering of laboratory teaching supplies, maintenance and annual editorial changes to web-based laboratory teaching materials and preparation of RG2 cultures and/or stained bacteriological and fungal materials, exam marking support
• In addition, the successful applicant will take a lead role in the maintenance of approximately 75 student microscopes and interact with the UPEI Biological Safety Officer and Associate Dean of Academic and Student Affairs to ensure Containment Levels in teaching support and teaching laboratories maintained and/or modified as needed

QUALIFICATIONS:

• A BSc (or equivalent) and a minimum of two years’ experience in a relevant discipline. 
• Ability to communicate knowledgeably
• Ability to order and track lab teaching supplies on myUPEI
• Ability to maintain/edit editorial changes to web based lab teaching materials
• Ability to liaise with the UPEI Biological Safety Officer and Associate Dean of Academic and Student Affairs as needed
