The Climate Research Lab requires two students to work with the Director of the Lab to create geographic visualizations of climate change.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful candidates will be part of a team who will create:
• a geographic visualization of Prince Edward Island using 2010 colour orthorectified aerial photos linked to an exaggerated digital elevation model (DEM) at 1.5m;
• Geographic visual flyovers to show the landscapes and coastlines of Prince Edward Island;
• visual flyovers to zoom in on areas of significant coastal erosion, coastal dynamics or importance – including Charlottetown Harbour, Summerside Harbour, Cavendish, Savage Harbour (Piggot’s Point), Souris and Lennox Island – and visualize past (1968) coastline dynamics highlighted in red;
• a geographic visualization of sea-level rise impact on the Island using “raising the bathtub level” approach, with a zoom in on areas of flooding risk, and examples of types of future armouring required to protect critical infrastructure; and
• a geographic visualization of rising temperatures, rising precipitation and indicators of climate (lengthening growing season, lengthening frost-free season, increasing extreme hot days, decreasing extreme cold days, increasing premium golf days) for Prince Edward Island.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Self motivated 4th year student, Masters, Ph.D. or recent graduate
• Excellent organization, time management and study skills
• Strong communication skills
• Ability to work with minimal supervision
• Specialized college or university courses in geographic information systems and/or geographic visualization
• Strong ArcGIS, Android ADK, Google Maps API, Shivia 3-D, Unity software skills
