The University of Prince Edward Island invites applications to fill a part-time student advisor position to support UPEI Aboriginal students.


• Core responsibilities will include the provision of short-term advising services to Aboriginal students experiencing a variety of personal, academic and educational concerns
• Coordination of the Mawi’omi Student Centre resources and activities
• The design and delivery of group programs and outreach activities
• Reporting to the Manager of Student Affairs,  the incumbent will work in conjunction with the academic support team and recruitment team in working with high school counselors and appropriate community resources that aim to support Aboriginal students with post-secondary enrolment
• Work with faculty and staff on various student engagement and retention initiatives
• Actively participate in the campus community


• A Bachelor of Arts degree in a social science along with a minimum of three years experience working with people, ideally in an appropriate post-secondary environment
• Familiarity working within Aboriginal communities is a must
• A Master’s degree and/or experience working with a diverse student population reflecting the reality of today’s campus, including issues of culture, gender, orientation, and equity would be considered assets
• Experience in leadership roles is essential and experience working on provincial and regional committees would be considered an asset
• We seek an individual who has well developed listening, observational, and interview skills with the flexibility to respond to the changing demands of this dynamic environment
• Must demonstrate an ability to work both independently and collaboratively
• Previous experience in a university setting is an asset, as is knowledge and experience addressing the challenges of student engagement and in particular, those of the first year experience
