 The Giberson/Lacroix group in the department of Biology is seeking a motivated summer student to work on a project on insect/plant relationships in the purple pitcher plant in PEI bogs. The successful applicant will have an interest and background in insect and/or plant ecology and be comfortable working in the field and the lab on insects and plants.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• assist in field studies in bogs in PEI collecting data on plants, insects, and water chemistry. Occasional long days in the field will be required, and working conditions may include inclement weather and biting flies.
• assist in sample processing in the laboratory, including sorting insects from debris using a stereo dissecting microscope, identifying insects and aquatic plants, analyzing for water chemistry using various laboratory analysis techniques
• work in the greenhouse helping with planting, plant maintenance, and collecting data
• assist in computer data entry as data are collected
• there is potential to carry out a small independent project (to be developed)
• assist as required in other laboratory duties
QUALIFICATIONS:
• minimum qualifications: at least two years of university biology with courses in botany, zoology, and ecology; some experience using Excel or QuattroPro spreadsheets; valid PEI drivers license.
• some combination of the following would be assets for this position: experience and training in identifying aquatic invertebrates and/or aquatic plants (especially to the species level), and in sampling invertebrates or plants from bogs; experience collecting and analyzing water samples chemically and/or for microscopic algae; experience using a dissecting microscope; experience using mapping software such as MapInfo.
• Preference will be given to a student wishing to carry out a research project that would be acceptable to the Biology department as an Undergraduate Research Project (Biology 440 or 441) at UPEI.
