$37,810 per annum, prorated to term as per CUPE 1870 (salary under review)

August 2012 – July 2013 (Term may be reduced or extended depending on performance, available funding and departmental requirements.)

Under the supervision of the Chair of Engineering, the Engineering Lab Technician will be responsible to support faculty in the organization, setup and supervision of engineering science and product design labs. Engineering science labs include, but are not limited to, strength of materials, dynamics , electric circuits, thermodynamics and fluid mechanics. Product design labs require knowledge of manufacturing and assembly including the use of industrial fabrication tools including drill presses, lathes, shears and saws. The candidate must have a broad base of engineering knowledge and should be comfortable working with young engineering students in an inquiry based educational environment.
• Operational and safety training for students including general orientation and demonstration of lab and fabrication equipment.
• Assist students in the design, fabrication and testing of program related and community based design projects.
• Purchase, set up and maintain experimental, testing and fabrication equipment.
• Procurement of general lab and project related materials.
• General duties related to day-to-day laboratory operations, such as record keeping, ordering supplies, maintaining equipment, general clean up, organization, waste disposal etc
• A diploma in engineering technology and practical project experience in an academic or industrial teaching environment. A broad and comprehensive combination of certified trade education and industrial work experience may also be considered.
• Knowledge of engineering methods, tools and procedures.
• Experience with typical laboratory analytical equipment and demonstrated hands on mechanical and electrical aptitude.
• Experience with electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
• Computer literate and proficient in Microsoft Office and experience with engineering software hardware tools and languages (Solid works, Solid edge, AutoCad, MatLab etc.)
• An understanding of prototype construction and best practice design and testing procedures with experience in a fabrication or manufacturing environment using a variety of materials and fabrication processes.
• An ability to interpret specifications and technical drawings
• Possesses strong oral and written communication skills and an ability to work independently with little supervision.
