The School of Engineering invites applications for a permanent fulltime design technician to manage and support all aspects of the PEI FabLab component of its industry based engineering program.  The FabLabTM (currently under development) is intended to be a fully functional rapid prototyping facility utilizing the latest 3D printing, CAD/CAM and CNC technology.   Working closely with faculty, students and industry clients, the successful applicant will be a critical resource in the design, development, fabrication and testing of innovative electro mechanical prototypes for community and industry based partners.
The UPEI School of Engineering is undergoing a significant expansion as it transitions from a diploma granting (first two years) to a degree granting program(years 3 &4).  Construction of a new state of the art “education/fabrication” facility is in the planning stages with a scheduled opening in the fall of 2016.  The engineering curriculum is a project based learning model in partnership with industry.  Industrial and community partners bring ideas and/or projects to the University which are evaluated and assigned to a compatible project group comprised of faculty, tech support, students and industry sponsors.  Projects are taken through a structured design process with the goal of deploying and testing fully functional industrial prototypes.
The successful candidate MUST have a broad base of engineering knowledge, industry experience and should be comfortable working closely with young engineering students in an inquiry based learning environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Manage all aspects of the FabLab as a dedicated support unit.
• Report directly to the Head of the School of Engineering while working independently and with little supervision.
• Create modify and refine 3D CAD models, parts and assemblies.
• Create instructions for computer numerically controlled (CNC) interface.
• Monitor quality control of automated manufacturing processes.
• Maintain all computer hardware, software and manufacturing equipment including but not limited to a variety 3D rapid prototyping , CNC milling and laser cutting devices.
• Meet with potential clients and explain the range of services that the Fab Lab and by association, that the School of Engineering can provide.
• Assist students in ensuring designs are reasonable and can be manufactured efficiently.
• Estimate and schedule projects to ensure effective utilization of Fab Lab assets and to ensure timely delivery of services and prototypes that are connected to a FIXED end of year Exposition experience (All projects MUST be completed in one form or another).
• Research, procure and maintain equipment to ensure redundancy in functionality.
• Order and track all materials and deliverables in a searchable project work order system.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Certificate or Diploma in mechanical and/or manufacturing engineering technology from an accredited program or equivalency.
• Minimum of five (5) years experience in an industry and/or academic computer assisted manufacturing environment.
• Membership or eligibility for membership in a related professional and/or industry based association.
• Comprehensive working knowledge in at least one of the following Computer Aided Design software: Solid Works, Solid Edge, Auto Cad Inventor or CATIA, and a willingness to learn, train and support users in other CAD/CAM environments.
• An understanding of basic simple PLC controllers and associated software would be considered an asset.
• A BSc. Eng. or BEng. in Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering or a related discipline would be considered an asset.
• Excellent oral and written communication and an ability to work in groups.
