A graduate research assistant is needed to collect, analyze, and disseminate information for a study entitled, “The Benefits and Challenges of Being a Teacher and Principal in a Rural School.” This research is led by Dr. Jane Preston, Faculty of Education, UPEI. 

The study represents an extensive literature review involving the anticipated collection and analysis of approximately 200+ published documents.   The purpose of the research is to document the benefits and challenges of working as a teacher or school principal in a rural school.


• Perform library and Internet searches on issues pertaining to rural education.
• Print and organize all documents found.
• Create a properly formatted APA reference list representative of all documents.
• Review/read documents and summarize the main points within the document.
• Analyze and thematically code the content of the documents.
• Meet with Dr. Preston every few weeks to provide updates on information found.


• Graduate student (Master’s or PhD) enrolled at UPEI (in the Faculty of Education).
• Experience with conducting library searches and collecting data for literature reviews.
• Strong analytical abilities similar to the skills needed to analyze a large qualitative data set.
• Strong writing and organizational skills.
• Ability to work independently.
• Familiarity with issues surrounding rural education.
• Ability to use APA writing and referencing guidelines.
