Dr. Shannon Fitzpatrick, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, is looking for a student research assistant to investigate problems related to graph searching as described in terms of the “Cops and Robber” game.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Pursuit-evasion games on graphs are of interest due to their applications to
such problems as the spread of viruses on computer networks and the development of robotic tracking and surveillance systems. “Cops and Robber” is one such game. In the traditional version of the game, the Cops know the Robber's position at all times. One variation of the game is to reduce the Cops' information. The student will be examining this variation on graphs including trees and circulant graphs, the goal being to find upper and lower bounds on
the number of Cops required to catch the Robber for particular classes of graphs.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The successful candidate will have completed his second year in a
Mathematics or Computer Science Program. Students who received a strong grade in Math 242, Math 371, or their equivalents, will be given priority.
