Reporting to the Director, Marketing and Communications, the Communications Officer is responsible for implementing and supporting media relations strategy in support of the marketing and communication priorities of the University.  The primary focus of the position is to promote the University and its programs to local, regional, national, and international audiences through the development and delivery of key internal and external messages through the use of a variety of tactics and tools.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Implement Communications Strategies:
• Assist / advise management on a variety of communications matters and issues by conducting daily media scans, proactively identifying and acting on risks and opportunities, preparing editorial content, op-ed pieces for faculty and senior administration
• Provide speaking notes and write speeches for management when requested
• Assist in the delivery of media training to University management, staff, and faculty

Implement and Deliver Media Relations Strategies/Tools:
• Serve as the University’s primary point of contact for members of the media and freelance writers
•  Field media calls, arrange interviews, or manage with the assistance of the director where appropriate
•  Write and distribute news releases and coordinate any follow-up
•  Liaise and nurture relations with media to seek out and pitch story ideas
•  Establish and maintain lists of media contacts and key targets
•  Source more efficient messaging tools and distribution channels; in particular, work with the Communications web team to contribute to a University-wide Social Media Plan
•  Participate in committees and working groups such as UPEI Emergency Communications Team in order to achieve media relations and communications objectives
•  Work closely with other University communications officers to coordinate media relations strategies

Write and Edit Copy:
• Assist with the writing, editing, and coordination of marketing and communications materials (publications, advertising, editorial information, news articles, social media items, and feature stories)
•  Assist with coordination of internal communications initiatives including but not limited to news and event items on upei.ca, Campus Notices, and the Campus Connector e-newsletter

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s degree in arts, public relations, communications, or a related field.
•  Minimum of one year directly-related, progressively-responsible experience, preferably in a complex organization with demonstrated success in strategic communications, media relations, and writing
•  Experience in using a variety of communications tools and vehicles to communicate with internal and external audiences, including media
• Demonstrated dedication to, and respect for the University, its goals and future
•  Intense commitment to product quality and building exceptional relationships
• Bilingual
