Rapid Prototyping (RP) is a technique that suggests adding layers of materials to create a 3-D component.  However in RP it is important to make the surface of the product with less jaggedness to reduce the post-processing cost.  There are different ways to achieve this goal, e.g. one can be an optimized adaptive slicing.  That is changing slices’ thicknesses to adapt the CAD model surface geometry.  But for the cases where slicing thickness cannot be changed during the building time, e.g. Rapid Prototyping, the other choice is to find the best slicing / building direction that minimizes the volume deviation between the actual CAD model and the assembly of slices.  The second approach is taken in this research.

The aim of this research is to propose a methodology for finding the best slicing / building direction for better surface quality in Rapid Prototyping products without simulating the building process.  Ideally, the outcome of this research will replace the current commonly used approach in industry that is based on try and error.

The ideal candidate for this position will have the following qualifications:
• Excellent knowledge of SolidWorks software.
• Computer Programming skills: VB.NET is preferred, C++ is acceptable.
• Familiarity with vector calculus.
• UPEI student until at least March 2016.
• GPA higher than 3.00.
