37.5 hours per week (9:00AM to 5:00PM)

$52,363 to $57,629 per annum as per CUPE 1870

The Veterinary Teaching Hospital requires an Animal Health Technician to work as a floater in the SA hospital and be the primary point-person on the clinic floor assisting with the new Electronic Medical Records (EMR) System. Primary responsibilities will be in Small Animal surgery, Small Animal ICU, and Small Animal medicine; however, support may be required in Small Animal anesthesia, Community Practice, Cardiology, and the Dispensary. 


Under supervision, job responsibilities will include:
• Managing surgical appointments, cases, and the surgical areas
• Completing treatment orders for patients in the ICU/wards
• Administering chemotherapy and other specialty procedures/treatments (scopes, blood transfusions, etc.)
• Providing clinical anesthesia support
• Providing support to the community practice service
• Monitoring and reporting to the clinician any abnormalities in animals in relation to the treatments and/or monitoring of animals
• Assisting students, staff, and clinicians with issues and problems with the new EMR system
• Ensuring EMR system is working smoothly, from a clinical perspective, and reporting problems to ITSS and Hospital management
• Stocking and maintaining supplies in various locations
• Maintaining biosecurity standards
• Covering lunches, sickness, vacation for other technicians in various areas within the SA hospital
• Updating patient billing
• Demonstrate ability to perform necessary nursing skills for the various levels of care required,
• Support veterinary students, technician students, and junior veterinarians participating in post-graduate programs with confidence and compassion
• Work in a position of flux and change that may revolve around and through many services within the small animal hospital
• Other related duties as assigned


• Must be a graduate of an Animal Health Technician program from a recognized facility
• RVT designation is required
• 3 plus years of experience working in a clinical setting with small animals
• Demonstrated ability to perform necessary nursing skills for the various levels of care required
• Demonstrated interpersonal skills, excellent oral and written communication skills
• Demonstrated reliability and self-motivation
• Strong computer skills with demonstrated ability in Windows and iOS Operating Systems.
• Previous experience with computerized medical records is required, with preference to applicants with knowledge of RxWorks and SmartFlow
• Demonstrated skills in multi-tasking, time-management, and adaptability
• Demonstrated ability to work well on a team
• Preference given to individuals with experience in specialty referral or academic practice
• Preference given to applicants with demonstrated experience in veterinary anaesthesia support, specialty small animal internal medicine support, and/or specialty small animal surgery support
• Preference given to applicants with demonstrated experience in small animal specialty service organization (i.e. the ability to help organize and run a service from the veterinary technician standpoint)
