$52,011 to $57,179 per annum pro-rated to term as per CUPE 1870 (out of scale adjustment)

June 2014 to May 2015 (Term may be reduced or extended depending on performance, available funding and departmental requirements.) 

The AVC Diagnostic Services invites applications from qualified individuals to fill a full-time term replacement position as a Virology Technologist in the Regional Diagnostic Virology Services (RDVS). The individual will work with a team in the provision of diagnostic virology testing services for the Provinces of Atlantic Canada, other places in Canada and internationally.


• The individual will perform routine diagnostic virology tests which are as follows: molecular diagnostic tests such as PCR, RT-PCR and nested PCR; immunological tests such as Enzyme-Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA), Indirect Fluorescent Antibody Test (IFAT) and virus neutralization (VN); virus detection in tissues using Fluorescent Antibody Test (FAT); and Virus Isolation in mammalian and fish specimens.
• He/she will be involved in housekeeping, general laboratory procedures and other related laboratory tasks.
• The individual will also participate in the CFIA accredited tests such as Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) and Enzootic Bovine (EBL) ELISA assays.
• He/she will be involved with monitoring and maintaining the quality systems of the laboratory consistent with ISO 17025 accreditation by the Standard Council of Canada.


• A medical laboratory technologist designation (MLT) is required
• A Bachelor of Science (BSc) in appropriate discipline would be an asset
• Relevant work experience in an integrated multidisciplinary diagnostic laboratory setting is required
• Experience in a veterinary diagnostic service, preferably in veterinary microbiology laboratory would be an asset.
• Hands-on experience and in-depth knowledge of techniques used in traditional diagnostic virology, tissue culture, aseptic techniques and immunodiagnostic and molecular diagnostic techniques is required
• Computer skills including those related to molecular biology required
• A general knowledge of viruses and in-depth knowledge of biocontainment, biosafety and general laboratory and housekeeping procedures are essential.
• Demonstrated strong interpersonal and communication skills and strong organizing and multitasking capabilities, as well as the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
