Dr. Karen Samis and Dr. Christian Lacroix, Biology Department, are seeking one Research Assistant to work in plant ecology research.

The research is funded by an NSERC Engage grant, and involves industry collaboration. We are working with Island Water Technologies to assess the potential of a seaweed extract as a biostimulant in plant growth. The extract will be tested on germination and plant growth in three plant systems in concurrent greenhouse experiments.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Assist in development and modification, as required, of experimental methodologies, including keeping track of and ordering supplies, as needed
• Conduct the experiments, which will involve germinating seeds, growing and treating plants, caring for and managing the experimental populations following all protocols and schedules
• Data collection (plant measurements, phenotyping) on a regular basis and as per agreed upon schedules, keeping a detailed lab book, and regular data entry into spreadsheets
• Some troubleshooting may be required to ensure experiments are complete and that data can be collected as planned
• Participate in lab meetings, provide status updates, and draft written summaries to be shared with industry partner on a regular basis
• Provide guidance and assistance to undergraduate student(s) working on the same project

QUALIFICATIONS:

• The researcher should have experience running and managing greenhouse experiments with a variety of plants
• Working knowledge of coastal ecosystems
• Demonstrated experience managing large numerical datasets in Excel
• Experience analyzing data using Jmp and/or R, or similar statistical programs
• A demonstrated strength in science writing and communication
• Training with HOBO climate data loggers
• Must be available to complete all or most hours during the regular work week, Monday-Friday, with minor exceptions to the schedule
• Allow some flexibility to working schedule during critical stages of the research, i.e. periodic availability on weekends or evenings
• Experience working with a team on academic research
• Able to commit to the research until project completion
