 The University of Prince Edward Island invites applications for a part-time laboratory technician in the Department of Biomedical Sciences to support research in the area of mammalian kidney development using mutant mouse genetic models and mouse organ culture models.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful candidate will provide general laboratory management and must be a self-motivated, highly focused, and strong team player, with demonstrated excellence in basic research, lab management, organization skills, responsibility and accurate lab record-keeping.
In addition to general lab duties, the successful applicant will provide specialized technical research support in the area of murine urogenital development and disease research, utilizing genetic mutant mouse models. Therefore, the successful candidate will have demonstrated expertise in mouse husbandry specifically pertaining to generation and maintenance of mutant mouse lines, including all aspects of handling, breeding, genotyping, health monitoring etc. The successful candidate will also have demonstrated excellence in rodent dissection and fine microdissection.
The successful applicant will be responsible for developing a cell-culture and embryonic kidney organ culture-based approach to screening genetically-dependent alterations in nephrogenesis. The successful candidate will have demonstrated expertise in generating and maintaining rodent tissue/organ/cell cultures, embryonic rodent organ dissections, as well as in generating rodent cryo-sections. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and follow study protocols to ensure technical aspects of studies are conducted as specified, and will be proficient in basic data and/or image analysis, and in accurate record-keeping. The successful candidate is able to learn new procedures quickly and to repeat them precisely and accurately.
Other duties include performing basic molecular biology techniques such as RNA isolation, immunofluorescence, PCR, qPCR, western blot etc.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates will have minimum qualifications of a BSc with at least 3 years of laboratory technical experience. The applicant will possess expertise in all aspects of mutant mouse husbandry and demonstrated excellence in embryonic rodent dissection, and will be proficient in tissue culture, PCR and other molecular biology techniques, and be willing to learn new techniques. Excellence in oral and written communication, computer-based data entry and analysis including ImageJ, Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint for Mac are required. Experience in laboratory management, working knowledge of standard operating procedures and practices for general lab management and basic molecular biology approaches are required. The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to work as a member of a team.
