The Department of Biomedical Sciences and AVC Lobster Science Centre seeks applications for a summer student research position to assist in conducting basic science studies in the environmental contaminants exposure of lobster.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful applicant will work under the supervision of graduate students, post-doctoral students and/or technical personnel to assist in experimental studies on the environmental contaminant exposure of lobster. Specific responsibilities include setup & husbandry of lobster exposures and follow up analyses including gene expression studies.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Candidates should be enrolled in a DVM undergraduate program and be returning to full-time studies in the Fall of 2015.
• Successful completion of courses in molecular biology, genetics and cell biology are required.
• Courses in marine/aquatic biology and statistics are desirable.
• Previous experience in aquatics research and molecular techniques (gene expression analysis using RT-qPCR) is an asset.
• The successful candidate should have a stated interest in basic or clinical research and demonstrate evidence of strong organizational skills, attention to detail and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
• Candidates should be familiar with standard data handling and presentation software and possess strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills appropriate to working in a team environment.
• Participation in the AVC Summer Research and Leadership program (see website for details) is an available option for interested students.
