RESPONSIBILITIES:
The student will be required to coordinate a counseling, training, and enrichment program for dogs at the PEI Humane Society under the supervision of the shelter manager. Duties will include counseling of potential dog adopters, behavioural assessments, training and enrichment for the dogs being held for adoption at the shelter, maintenance of training records, development of educational display materials, investigation of practical ways to enrich the shelter environment, and assistance with the training of shelter staff and volunteers. The successful applicant will work with the assistance of three other student employees during the fall and winter semesters.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum first year standing in the DVM program. Experience in the application of operant conditioning with a secondary reinforcer (clicker training) is preferred. Demonstrated interest in shelter issues and the importance of behaviour modification as well as excellent communication skills are essential.
