Dr. Gordon MacDonald, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, is looking for a student research assistant to work on a research project with the goal of creating a more efficient matrix multiplication algorithm.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Research Assistant will:
• help design and implement a genetic search algorithm to find possible alternate algebraic expressions for entries of the product of two n by n matrices which use fewer than n cubed multiplications.
• review the literature concerning the three known algorithms for more efficient matrix multiplications and look for commonalities which will allow us to reduce the size of the search space.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• The successful candidate must have strong ability in both Linear Algebra and Computer Programming. 
• Students must have completed UPEI's Math 261 and CS 151 and CS 152 (or equivalents). Students must include their grades in these courses with their applications, and by applying, give consent for the Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics to verify these grades through UPEI's online course management system.
