Department of Music - Faculty of Arts
Sessional Instructor
2016/2017 Academic Year

The Department of Music at the University of Prince Edward Island invites applications for a sessional instructor to teach the following course during the 2016-2017 academic year (both Fall and Winter semesters).  This position is subject to final budgetary approval.

Music 341/441 Philosophical, psychological and sociological perspectives for emerging music professionals

This course guides students to examine big questions that will impact their practice as
professional musicians¬¬—as teachers, performers, conductors, composers, journalist-broadcasters, arts administrators, therapists, coaches, and arts and culture sector workers. Such big questions as why do we musick? what does it mean to be musical? what is ‘good’ music and who decides? does music contribute to improving lives? how do globalization and technology impact musical practices? are too complex to be addressed through a single discipline. We will explore and debate ideas from philosophy, music psychology, social psychology and sociology to grow our understanding of the intellectual and ethical dimensions of being a professional musician.

Successful applicants will have at least a Master’s degree in Music (Doctorate preferred) plus evidence of effective teaching in the relevant area at the university level.
