The Chemistry Department requires a Research Assistant to assist with a Physical Chemistry research project with Dr. Brian Wagner involving fluorescence-based investigations of the formation of supramolecular host-guest inclusion complexes in ionic liquids.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• The student will investigate the formation of supramolecular host-guest inclusion complexes in ionic liquid solvents using fluorescence spectroscopy.
• Inclusion into various hosts will be explored, including cyclodextrins and cucurbiturils, using a range of polarity-sensitive fluorescent probes as potential guests.
• The binding constants and effect on guest fluorescence in ionic liquids will be determined and compared to the analogous behaviours in aqueous solution.
• The student will prepare analytical solutions of the host and guest pairs in ionic liquids and in water, measure absorption and fluorescence spectra, perform fluorescent titrations as a function of host concentration to determine binding constants, and analyze the results.
• Other responsibilities will include participation in group meetings, and maintenance of the laboratory working space and equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• The successful candidate should be a UPEI Chemistry Majors or Honours student, and have completed at least two years of their Chemistry program with a strong academic performance;
