The position(s) will be supervised by Dr. Mark Fast (Novartis Research Chair in Fish Health) within his laboratory in the Department of Pathology and Microbiology.  This award would service a single or several research projects that would cover such areas as microbiology, parasitology, fish immunology, vaccination, and/or molecular biology.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Novartis Animal Health and the research chair in fish health are dedicated to a better understanding of fish responses to different pathogens and developing new and better ways to prevent and treat disease in farmed fish.  It is hoped that this award will encourage students to pursue future research endeavours and/or veterinary specialization within the field of fish health.  The award will provide for the student to assist Dr. Fast and his research group in the areas identified above according to the availability of projects and the student’s interests.  The successful applicant may be asked to participate in one project or a number of projects in any of the above disciplines.  Some of the research projects could provide excellent training in cell culture, nucleic acid extraction, PCR, enzyme assays, immunization, pathology and bacteriology laboratory work.  There is also a possibility of field work.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Computer literacy with spreadsheets and ability to find and download Net documents.
• Preference to a veterinary student who has completed 2nd year of the program and an interest and proficiency in aquatic animal health.
